1. Is Functional Medicine the right choice for you? It's a Consideration. As a practitioner of functional medicine, I naturally lean towards its benefits. However, it entails a higher level of patient engagement compared to conventional medical approaches. It isn't just a matter of receiving a prescription and leaving; instead, it involves an extensive dialogue with your healthcare provider, resulting in a personalized health strategy. This strategy is bound to encompass lifestyle adjustments, as that is the core principle of functional medicine. The focus is on addressing the root causes, rather than merely alleviating symptoms. The causes are in your lifestyle or environment, and you’re going to have to change some things to get back to health. So, if you’re considering seeing a functional medicine practitioner, here are some questions you should ask yourself: 1. Are You Willing to Invest Time? Functional medicine delves into the fundamental origins of ailments, aiming to uncover underlying causes instead of tackling isolated symptoms. This investigative process demands time and a comprehensive data collection. Expect to provide previous medical records, lab results, and other pertinent information. A thorough intake form, covering aspects like diet, exercise routines, and bodily functions, is typically part of the process. This information is vital for a holistic assessment. Remember, you're not the only one dedicating time. Your provider invests hours in reviewing your data, formulating diagnoses, and devising a plan. This is a holistic journey, not a quick fix. Achieving authentic health entails an ongoing process. Once your medical history is established, and necessary tests are conducted, the path to restoration commences. Quick fixes aren't the objective; genuine healing takes time. Follow-up appointments will occur, continually evaluating progress and refining the approach until equilibrium is restored. The reward is experiencing the vitality and allure of genuine health, which becomes an enduring preference. 2. Are You Ready for Transformation? Lifestyle elements often play a substantial role in fostering diseases and dysfunctions. To effect genuine progress, embracing change is imperative. Functional medicine doesn't focus on mere symptom management; it aims to address the core causes. Are you prepared to embrace alterations? Adjustments may encompass dietary shifts, stress management, sleep pattern improvements, and increased physical activity. Anticipate change as a fundamental component of your journey when engaging with a functional medicine practitioner. Even before your consultation, contemplate the barriers that have hindered your pursuit of optimal health. Identifying obstacles such as time constraints or uncertainty about healthy habits will aid your doctor in tailoring an effective plan. 3. Do You Have a Support System? Crafting an effective treatment plan benefits from awareness of your available resources. These resources empower your success. While financial means and time availability are crucial, social support often proves pivotal. Whether it's a partner, family member, friend, or confidant, having a support system significantly enhances your chances of triumph. Assistance, encouragement, and accountability are invaluable during periods of transformation. If comfortable, involve a support person in your consultation to facilitate comprehension of your circumstances and the path towards enhanced well-being. If immediate support is lacking, alternatives exist. Health coaches, virtual communities or inspiring online resources can serve as substitutes. Ultimately, your capacity to overcome obstacles remains steadfast.

4. What to know before your first appointment? I don't have access to your NHS medical records so it's very important that you complete the health questionnaires / consent form that are sent to you after you book your appointment. It is also helpful for you to bring any copies of conventional blood test results within the last 3-6 months and any GP or specialist correspondence with you if you have any.

5. Do I accept health insurance company? I do not engage with any insurance provider. I am unable to handle medical claim submissions on your behalf or offer assistance in resolving claims. The responsibility for submitting claims to your insurance company rests with you. All services are strictly offered on a self-payment basis. However, I will provide you with an insurance billing invoice that you can present to your insurance provider for potential reimbursement. It's important to be aware that certain procedures and laboratory tests may not be covered due to the specific terms of your individual insurance policy or plan. If you have any inquiries about your medical coverage, please get in touch with your insurance carrier. Your insurance company might request additional information and may not accept the diagnosis codes, potentially leading to claim denials. It's essential to understand that the Functional Medicine approach to healthcare differs from the conventional model, which relies on diagnostic codes for reimbursement. These conventional reimbursable codes may not always align with the functional medicine evaluation and may not be covered. Regrettably, we lack the capacity to alter medical codes or liaise with your insurance provider. Kindly inform your insurance company that any payments should be directed straight to you.
